Cantabria and Asturias are adjacent autonomous regions of Northern Spain that front the Atlantic Ocean on the southern shores of the Bay of Biscay. Straddling the border between the two regions is the Picos de Europa, one of Spain’s most spectacular mountain ranges, characterized by towering summits, plunging gorges and hidden valleys that shelter idyllic mountain villages. The Picos are a habitat for some of Europe’s rarest wildlife.
“Green Spain”, as the region is sometimes known, offers images and experiences very different from those of Mediterranean Spain. The Costa Verde is Spain’s most dramatic coastline with fine arching bays between massive cliffs topped by verdant meadows. This is a region of the country that is known, appreciated and frequented by the Spanish themselves. Besides superb cycling, you can also look forward to wonderful food and some of Spain’s finest wines.
