Rioja and the River Ebro Self-Guided Tour (7 Nights)

Tour code: ROJ7SG

Tour Overview

The small province of La Rioja is distinguished by its ochre-coloured earth and bright blue skies, and of course by the world-famous wine.  The upper Rioja produces some of Spain’s finest and most memorable reds. Our Rioja tour follows a stretch of the River Ebro which is the longest river in Spain flowing from close to the Atlantic all the way to the Mediterranean. We start at the source and follow it through the regions of Cantabria, Castile, Basque Country and La Rioja. We start close to the Ski resort at Alto Campoo in the midst of green pastures and immense forests, and as we descend the climate and vegetation slowly become more Mediterranean in style. The river begins to form huge canyons which wouldn’t look out of a place in a Western Movie. A succession of wide valleys and more canyons follows, dotted with tiny quaint villages, beautiful churches and impressive castles.

The prosperous region is famed throughout the world for the wine it exports, but the simple authenticity, charm and beauty of the area are what truly set it apart.

Various popular festivals held throughout the region celebrate viticulture. The Vendimia Riojana is held during the third week of September in the city of Logroño to celebrate the grape harvest; festivities include a parade of carts, bullfights and of course the wine ...

See the Regional Details page for further information on the scenery and attractions.
