East Coast Sardinia Self-Guided Tour (9 Nights)

Tour code: SARSG9

Tour Overview

The east coast of Sardinia is delightfully quiet and unspoiled. The towns are not large, and most are situated a few kilometres from the coast so there are plenty of spectacular deserted beaches. The interior is the domain of shepherds and their flocks. This is a region for those who prefer to get off the beaten track.

Starting from Quartu near Cagliari you follow the coastline to Villasimius, the leading resort on the south west coast. A side trip to the spectacular Capo Carbonara to see the Notteri marsh, a stopping off point for migratory flamingos, is recommended. From Villasimius you ride north towards Muravera at the mouth of the Flumendosa River passing the Colostai Salt Lake en route.  At Orroli you can visit the Nuraghe Arrubiu (a UNESCO site) and the local Omu Axiu museum. From Orroli you head back towards the coast, passing through the small towns of Escaloplano and Perdasdefogu en route to Jerzu. Here you can visit Jerzu Antichi Poderi,  one of Sardinia’s most renowned cantinas.
Arbatax, further up the coast is the terminus for the narrow gauge trains arriving from Cagliari. Close by are numerous beautiful coves. From Arbatax to Dorgali you follow the beautiful  Orientale Sarda road which runs through the Gennargentu National Park. There are some testing climbs along this stretch, but the views make them all worthwhile. After the Genna Silana Pass, you are rewarded with a long descent to Dorgali. North of Dorgali you visit Oliena and Galtelli on the way to Posada. The route from Posada to Olbia passes through some of the  most renowned resorts and beaches of the Costa Smerelda
