This tour extends the Tuscany
itinerary, adding two days cycling at the start of the tour.
Starting in Volterra, the cultural centre of the Upper Cecina Valley
the additional routes explore the Val d’Elsa region with its
vineyards and its fields bursting with sunflowers. Additional attractions
include Volterra’s alabaster museum, the medieval “Manhatten”
that is San Gimignano and the walled stronghold of Monteriggioni.
The Val d’Elsa is traversed by the Via Francigena, the
medieval pilgrimage route to Rome.
Routes 1 and 2, starting in Volterra and ending
in Siena are described below. Routes 3 to 8 correspond
to Routes 1 to 6 of the Tuscany itinerary. You
should read the description of the Tuscany itinerary in conjunction
with this page for a full tour itinerary.
The tour starts in Volterra, where you will be met and fitted
with
bicycles and equipment, and taken through the routes. A drink in
the beautiful Piazza dei Priori square is the perfect way to end
the evening.
Route 1 from Volterra to Colle di Val d’Elsa is a beautiful
ride on undulating terrain that gives you an immediate introduction
to the real Tuscany. The medieval centre of San Gimagnano makes
the perfect lunch stop on this ride.
Route 2 leads south from Colle di Val d’Elsa through rolling
countryside to medieval citadel of Monteriggioni and then continues
south to the fabulous city of Siena. The core route is short enough
to allow plenty of time to explore the city. For those who want
to spend more of their day in the saddle, there is the option of
a challenging extension.
Routes 3 to 8 correspond to Routes 1 to 6 of the Tuscany
itinerary.
