This is a challenging itinerary that will appeal to cyclists who would like to see a beautiful part of central Italy far removed from the mass tourism destinations. This is for those who are looking for an “off the beaten path” experience.
From the trailhead town of Sansepolcro and the plains of the Upper Tiber Valley, the first bicycling route leads east climbing along the ancient Via Maggio towards the castle and fortified towns and villages of the Marche. The first destination of San Leo, perched on top of vertical limestone cliffs, is typical – and awe inspiring! From San Leo there is a beautiful ride through the rolling hills of the Montefeltro countryside to the Renaissance town of Urbino for a two night stopover. This UNESCO World Heritage Site may well keep you off your bike for most of the next day, but there are several options for the loop ride, and a visit to the village of Sant’Angelo in Vado is highly recommended. The route from Urbino to Cagli takes you through the forested slopes of the Cesane Mountains and the dramatic Furlo Gorges. From Cagli you cycle south through the limestone massifs of the Appenines to Gubbio, crossing into Umbria en route. The final leg takes you back west towards the Tiber Valley to finish with a demanding climb up to Perugia, Umbria’s regional capital.
